Understanding Project Maths

Why Irish maths questions are wrapped in real-world stories, what changed when Project Maths arrived, and how to answer a context question that looks unfamiliar.

Parents helping with homework often reach the same conclusion: this is not the maths I did. They are right, and the reason has a name.

Project Maths was the reform that reshaped Irish second-level mathematics, rolled out in phases from 2010 and fully examined at Leaving Cert from 2015. The syllabus content changed less than people assume. What changed profoundly was how questions are asked, and that is what makes an exam paper look so different from one sat in the nineties.

What the reform was trying to fix

The problem it set out to address was a recognised one. Students were leaving school able to execute procedures but unable to apply them. You could differentiate a function and have no idea what a derivative told you about anything. You could solve a quadratic and not recognise a situation that needed one.

The old papers rewarded that. Questions arrived pre-packaged: here is an equation, solve it. The mathematical decision, working out which piece of maths a situation calls for, had already been made for you by the examiner.

Project Maths moved that decision back onto the student. That is the whole reform, in one sentence.

What actually changed on the paper

Questions arrive wrapped in context. Rather than "solve this equation", a question describes a business, a population, a journey, a game, and asks something about it. The mathematics is the same; extracting it is now part of the task.

Questions cross topics. A single Section B question may need algebra, then a graph, then a rate of change. Topics are no longer sealed off from each other the way they were when each question belonged to one chapter.

Explanation carries marks. Papers ask students to justify, explain, comment on, or interpret. A number alone does not answer those, and marks are attached to the sentence.

Statistics and probability grew substantially, particularly at Leaving Cert, reflecting how much of adult numeracy is actually about data.

The formulas are given. Formulae and Tables is provided, which shifts the marks away from recall and towards selection and application.

Why students find context questions hard

It is worth being precise about this, because "I can't do word problems" is treated as a personality trait when it is a learnable skill.

The difficulty is almost never the mathematics. Strip the story away and the calculation is usually something the student can do comfortably. The difficulty is in three specific steps:

  1. Deciding what the question is asking, when it is expressed in ordinary English and buried in a paragraph.
  2. Choosing which mathematical tool applies, when nothing on the page names it.
  3. Translating back, converting the number you produced into an answer about the situation.

Those are three separate skills, and none of them is practised by doing pages of "solve for x". A student who has only ever practised the calculation will freeze at step one and conclude they cannot do the maths, when they have never been taught the part they are actually stuck on.

How to answer a context question

The method that works is deliberately mechanical, because the point is to have something to do when the question looks unfamiliar and panic is available.

1. Read it once without a pen. Just understand the situation. What is going on, who is involved, what is changing.

2. Read it again, marking up. Circle every number and its units. Underline the actual question, usually the last line of each part. Cross out description that carries no mathematical information; a good deal of a Section B question is scene-setting.

3. Write down what you have and what you want. Two short lists. This is where the mathematical decision usually makes itself: a starting amount, a rate, and a time period is a pattern you recognise.

4. Name the topic. Say it to yourself. "This is a rate of change question." Once it is named, you are back in familiar territory and you know what tools you own.

5. Do the maths. The part you were always able to do.

6. Answer in the language of the question. If it asked about profit, the answer is in euro and mentions profit. A bare number at the bottom of the page does not close the loop, and closing it is often worth a mark.

Step two does most of the work, and step six is the one most often skipped.

The parts students most often drop

The "explain" part. Papers ask you to comment on whether an answer is reasonable, or to justify a conclusion. These are not decoration. They carry marks, and they are frequently the easiest marks in the question, because a clear sentence referring back to the context will usually do it. Students who treat maths as a subject where you do not write sentences leave them behind consistently.

The units and the context. An answer of "4.7" where the question asked how many buses are needed has not answered the question, and you cannot have 4.7 buses. Sense-checking against the real situation is part of the method, not an optional flourish.

What it means for how you study

The reform has a direct consequence for revision: practising procedures alone is not enough, and it never was under this syllabus.

If your revision is working through exercises where the question tells you what to do, you are training step five and none of the others. That is why students who feel well prepared can still open a Section B question and find nothing to hold on to.

The fix is past papers, particularly Section B, worked properly. It is the only place the full skill (read, extract, choose, calculate, interpret) is exercised together. Our past paper walkthroughs break these questions down at each of those stages rather than just showing the calculation.

For parents

If you are trying to help and the questions look alien, the mathematics underneath is very likely mathematics you know. What has changed is the packaging.

The most useful thing you can do with a stuck student is not to solve it. It is to ask: what is this question actually asking? What are you being given? That is exactly the step they are stuck on, and it is the step the exam is really testing.
