A Parent's Guide to Irish Maths

Levels, cycles, CBAs, bonus points and the decisions that actually matter: a plain guide to how Irish secondary maths works, for parents who did a different system.

If your own schooling was the Junior Cert and the pre-2015 Leaving Cert, a fair amount has changed, enough that helping with homework can feel like arriving in the middle of a conversation.

This is a plain guide to how the system works now, what the decision points are, and which of them actually matter.

The two cycles

Irish secondary school splits into two stages.

Junior Cycle covers first, second and third year, ending with the Junior Cycle examinations in June of third year.

Senior Cycle covers fifth and sixth year, ending with the Leaving Certificate. Transition Year sits between them in most schools.

Maths is compulsory throughout, and it is one of the subjects offered at more than one level.

Levels: Higher, Ordinary, Foundation

At both cycles, maths is taken at Higher or Ordinary level. Foundation level is also available at Leaving Cert.

Students can and do change level, usually downwards, and usually somewhere between fifth year and the spring of sixth. Schools set their own deadlines for the final decision, but it is made formally when exam entries are submitted.

This is the decision parents ask us about most, so it is worth setting out the stakes properly.

The 25 bonus points, and what they are worth

Students who take Leaving Cert Higher Level maths and achieve a H6 or above receive 25 bonus CAO points.

This is a genuinely significant incentive and it is worth understanding precisely.

  • The bonus applies to Higher Level maths only.
  • A H6 is the lowest grade that attracts it, so a student who finds Higher Level difficult but stays with it can still collect the full 25 points.
  • The points are added when the maths grade is one of the six subjects counted in the CAO calculation.

The practical implication is that dropping from Higher to Ordinary costs more than the difference between two grades. A student scraping a H6 at Higher Level may end up with more CAO points than the same student comfortably achieving a strong grade at Ordinary Level.

That is not an argument for keeping every student at Higher Level regardless. It is an argument for making the decision with the arithmetic in front of you rather than in a difficult week in February. Some courses also require Higher Level maths for entry, so it is worth checking the requirements of anything your child is considering before the level is dropped.

How Junior Cycle maths is assessed

This is where the change from the old Junior Cert is largest, and where most parents' assumptions are out of date.

A single written examination in June of third year, lasting two hours, at Higher or Ordinary level, set and marked by the State Examinations Commission. Not two papers. One.

Two Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs), completed in school during second and third year and reported through the Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement.

An Assessment Task, a written task done in class and sent to the SEC for marking, worth 10% of the marks used to determine the grade.

So the grade is not settled entirely by one morning in June. Work across second and third year contributes, which is worth knowing when a student decides a CBA does not matter.

Junior Cycle results are reported in descriptors (Distinction, Higher Merit, Merit, Achieved, Partially Achieved) rather than the percentages you may remember.

How Leaving Cert maths is assessed

Two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each 2 hours 30 minutes and each worth 300 marks. They are sat on separate days in June.

Each paper is divided into two sections of equal weight:

  • Section A: Concepts and Skills. Recognisable, syllabus-shaped questions.
  • Section B: Contexts and Applications. Longer questions set in real-world scenarios, often combining several topics.

Broadly, Paper 1 covers algebra, functions, sequences and series, complex numbers and calculus. Paper 2 covers geometry, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, probability and statistics.

Grades run H1 to H8 at Higher Level and O1 to O8 at Ordinary. A booklet of formulas and tables is provided in the exam, so memorising formulas is not the task it once was.

Project Maths: why the questions look different

If the homework looks unfamiliar, this is usually why.

The Project Maths reform, phased in from 2010 and fully examined at Leaving Cert from 2015, changed how questions are asked rather than what is on the course. Questions now arrive wrapped in real-world context, cross several topics at once, and often ask students to explain or justify rather than only to calculate.

The mathematics underneath is largely mathematics you will recognise. What has changed is that identifying which mathematics applies is now part of the student's job rather than the examiner's. We cover this in more detail in our guide to the Project Maths approach.

The decisions that actually matter

Ranked by how much difference they make, in our experience:

1. Whether gaps get fixed when they appear. This dwarfs everything else. Maths is cumulative to an unusual degree, and a student who is shaky on fractions in second year will be shaky on algebra in third year and on calculus in sixth. Addressing a gap costs weeks. Ignoring one costs years.

2. Whether the student stays at Higher Level, and on what basis. Worth deciding on evidence rather than on a bad term. Ask whether the difficulty is in the current topic or in foundations underneath it. Foundations are fixable, and more often the real cause than people expect.

3. Consistency of practice. Twenty minutes four times a week outperforms three hours on a Sunday, because maths is a skill subject rather than a content subject. This is the single most useful piece of scheduling advice we give.

4. Whether the student will ask when they do not understand. The strongest predictor of improvement we see. A question asked in October is worth ten asked in May.

What is genuinely useful for a parent to do

You do not need to be able to do the maths. Some of the most effective parents we deal with cannot, and it does not matter.

Ask what the question is asking, not how to solve it. That is where students actually get stuck under Project Maths, and it is a question you can ask without knowing the topic.

Notice if maths is the subject that gets dropped in a busy week. It usually has no deadline attached, so it goes first, and because it is cumulative, missed weeks compound in a way that missed history reading does not.

Watch the calendar, not just the grades. The level decision, the CBAs, the mocks and the CAO deadlines all arrive at predictable times. Knowing what is coming is most of the value.
